We posted a while back about a new jig for making mitre joints for box making using a table mounted router and a flush trim router bit. We have now taken the concepts from this jig and turned them into a prototype box making attachment to the Mitre Maker.
The box maker attachment bolts directly to the Mitre Maker baseplate and fence so that boards can be securely clamped and trimmed using a flush trim router bit.
The attachment has two fences, one mounted parallel to the cutting surface to hold a movable spring loaded clamp, and the other mounted at 90 degrees to the cutting surface and inclined at 45 degrees.
The 90 degree fence is the same section used on the Mitre Maker. This means that the positioning stops and sliding stop can be readily transferred when the Mitre Maker is configured for cutting boards rather than framing stock. Similarly, the Mitre Maker extension fence can also be mounted so that longer boards can be accurately trimmed to length.
Mounting the box maker attachment is relatively straight forward, but current Mitre Maker users will need to drill out mounting holes in their baseplate by using a template.
The box maker attachment is currently undergoing testing and we are looking to make a small production run soon.
