This article describes a combined dust extraction and cutter shield system for use on the router table and Mitre Maker jigs.
The dust extractor is made of aluminium box section and is clamped directly to the the router table. The dust extractor is held firmly in place if two clamps are used near the edges of the section where the side walls can support a reasonable amount of clamping force.
Insufficient clamping force, or clamping in the centre of the box section may allow the extractor to vibrate loose while the router is in operation.
The clear guard attached to the dust extractor is designed to sit just above the cutter and provide a clear view of the cutting process while still allowing full use of the jig.
The guard has ample clearance for the tongue and groove cutter and for almost all the height range of the standard 38mm cutter and bearing.
The aluminium box section is fitted to a downpipe connector which is then easily attached to a typical dust extraction system.
The aluminium box section is an essential component of this extractor because it must be stiff enough to clamp to the router table surface. Both plastic and thin steel downpipe box sections easily deflect under clamping force and can vibrate loose while the router is in operation.
This dust extraction system works very well with the Mitre Maker and box maker attachment to keep your workshop tidy and provide extra protection from the exposed cutter.
