Getting the full range from your T&G cutter

At Mitre Maker, we recently had the good fortune of having Neil Scobie of Bucca Creek Wood and Textiles (www.neilandlizscobie.com) put the Mitre Maker to the test.

One point of constructive feedback we received from Neil was the very small amount of bearing that runs along the baseplate when using the tongue and groove cutter on timber less than about 15mm thick. The current cutter design means that the bearing sits too low on the shank, limiting the full 11-22mm range of cutting thickness when placing the workpiece on the Mitre Maker.

Our solution to this problem, to get the extra 4 or 5mm of range from the tongue and groove cutter, is to use a 4.5mm packing piece underneath your workpiece so that more of the bearing can run along the cutting face.

These photos show an interlocking mitre being cut on a 12.5mm piece of timber, with and without the packing piece.
